thanks, I am aware of the license breach but it will be to avoid to reinstall the actual host and it s just for moving a bunch of vms.

Re: vCD Upload timeout

Total amount for a single VM being uploaded.  Thinking is, if we fail in the middle, we'll delete it anyways.  So might as well be patient and get the whole thing uploaded, check it, then ship it off to it's next destination.

Iam thanks, as we say down here "your bloods worth bottling"

The name's Jon ... and this was kinda creepy till I looked up what it meant.

So ... Thanks, eh!

Thanks, Matt.  I got the license installed so that part is perfect.

I'm not sure what the make and model os the nic is off the top of my head.  I will have to open the box up and have a look later on.  When I get it apart, I'll let you know.

VM with memory Limit

Dear All,

i have a VM with 3vCPU and 12 GB of RAM running heavy tasks on it.

Customer reports that on every monday the VM goes unavailable for 10 minutes and it affects production.

Earlier VM Settings are below:

----------

VM - Guest OS-w2k3

RAM-12GB Limit set as 1GB

CPU- Limit set as 1.47ghz

So i Found that May be  the VM Constraint for CPU Resources and Removed the Limit in Resource Allocation and Set as unlimited CPU Cycles to VM.

And this monday Customers reporting the same Issue. So i think the VM is not constraint for CPU Cycles.

So i Thought of removing the Limit on Memory too( thinking to set unlimited), Please advise is this cause any performace problems in VM/DRS Cluster( I have enough Memory in Cluster).

============

Below is the idea i captured on VMware Performace Troubleshooting guide, May i Proceed with Memory Setting change as Unlimited.

---------------

Increase the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine. This action decreases disk and or network activity for applications that cache. This might lower disk I/O and reduce the need for the host to virtualize the hardware. Virtual machines with smaller resource allocations generally accumulate more CPU ready time.

----------

Thanks and Regards,

Rajesh

Robuea,

I have seen that exact "bad record mac" error. HP diagnostics showed no problems. We replaced all of the blade hardware and it ended up being the last thing we replaced, a bad CPU. I don't think it is related to the issue that others are seeing.

The main reason to install vCenter is that you've purchased it already

By the time you've bought two servers, a SAN, and enough VMware licensing to run three servers (you have) you really should try to swing one more server. That'll let you use what you've paid for - and you'll get high availability and all those nice things.

If you really needed one server - one server with local storage would have been far cheaper and easier to manage. And then all you'd need is one ESXi license.

Thanks Guys.

Business is not keen on going for the most recent release so looks like I will be going with VMware vCenter Server 5.1.0b been out for a while.

Any advise or suggestions with this one?

Re: Prevent maintenance mode boot after power failure

I know it is probably not much comfort but I thought I would test and see what happens here. To that end I created a virtual ESXi server and configured the Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown behaviour on this host with 1 (one) VM. To my surprise after "pulling the plug" on the host and then restarting the host, it too entered maintenance mode. This was consistently repeatable.

Further mucking around kept generating the same response even after patching host with the latest VMware patches. Somewhere along the way it stopped doing it - not sure what the fix was but will continue to test and see if I can locate what "fixed" it.

One thing that has changed is that when the host kept entering Maintenance Mode after a power loss the virtual machine would be listed as Orphaned. Now the VM stays in the inventory.

Kind regards.

Yes... you need to be careful during the replication process. The data will be overwritten. Recommendation is to not do any changes to the PROD while DR is being built otherwise these will get overwritten when you replicate the data back to PROD.

The way this will work is

Site1 has info.

Create Site 2. Import the data from site1. Create any additional data.

Import back to site 1. Site 1 now has data from both site1 and site2.

You have to create an optimized datastore for each different offset. Why don't you use the VSC Optimization and Migration "Scan Manager"? It will help you (a little bit...) to find out the needed offsets.

Re: Assistance needed enabling nested vSphere 5.0 U2 FT on Sandy bridge Xeon server

Adding the replay advanced options per the virtuallyghetto blog post does not resolve the FT issue.  The small (1GB RAM 1 vCPU) nested 32bit VM I am using to test FT fails to start the secondary FT vm and displays the following errors:

- Cannot power on the Fault Tolerance Secondary VM for virtual machine FTtest.  Refer to the errors list for details.

- A general system error occurred:  Source detected that destination failed to resume.

These errors generally correspond to the issue described in VMware KB 2002379.  The KB article has a code snippet that shows the last MigrateSetState equal to 11.  The highest MigrateSetState value I see in the log is 5, which drops to zero when the secondary FT VM fails to start.

This seems to suggest the reported FT status of the nested vSphere VM is accurate and the required replay capability is not functioning.

Edit:  The following is output from esxcfg-info regarding the nested vSphere server vCPU capabilities:

IBM TAM e-sso not working in vmware view 5.2 with PoIP

Hi,

with refer to subject i am doing a testing of vmware view 5.2 in my lab, I have found TAM e-sso is not working with PoIP protocol, the same works with MS-RDP.

My lab details.

ESXi 5.1U1/vCenter installed on 2008R2 - v 5.1U1.

OS for view testing windows 7 prof x32 Bit / i am testing TAM in dedicated VM not in link cloned VM

when the OS boots up, I have to get login screen of TAM (the same works with RDP but it is not working with PoIP) from view client.

I wanted to know where I am missing the step.

Re: Prevent maintenance mode boot after power failure

Okay after further testing I have come up with a theory - not a good theory but a theory anyway.

Something was rattling around in my head about how often ESXi saves (backs up) configuration data to disk. My memory said every 10 minutes but after a little research this link suggests it varies: http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2011/09/how-often-does-esxi-write-to-the-boot-disk.html

From here you can see that unless something more serious is happening in the ESXi configuration it will be once an hour (assuming a change has taken place). So what does this potentially have to do with your problem?

Well entering and exiting Maintenance Mode (MM) is a configuration change. If I enter MM on my test ESXi host then reboot the server normally, i.e. via the vSphere client when the host comes back online it will still be in MM. No worries here. Now if I exit the host from MM and then pull the power, after returning power to the host it entered MM on starting. This cycle will continue until I exit the host from MM and then save the configuration to disk either by rebooting the host via vSphere client (ignoring the error about not being in MM) or waiting an hour or so. (Full disclosure: Have not actually waited an hour to confirm this. Maybe later for fun or if I'm bored)

Consequently this also happens in reverse, i.e. if you put a host into MM then pull the power when it restarts it will not be in MM.

Now for the side track or why my test VM kept getting orphaned after a reset of the host. It was for the same reason as the above. I registered the VM then within a short period reset the host. vCenter knew about the VM but the host did not. Allowing the ESXi configuration to write to disk solved stopped this VM from being orphaned after a reset of the host.

Thoughts?

Afaik no.

Could it be that the port (443) is not open from the client where you run PowerCLI to these ESXi servers ?

You can try to connect over port 80 (Protocol and Port parameters on the Connect-VIServer cmdlet).

Darius - or anyone else....

We are getting the same error.  We tried your suggestion with no success.  We paid for Technical support and spent 4 hours on the phone with no success. They said we had an issue with the hardware overclocking and walked through disabling the Turbo on the Dell PERC510.  They wanted us to disable or enable AES but the BIOS did not have the options.  Needless to say we are feeling lost.  We have updated the BIOS as part of our troubleshooting process with no success.  Below is the most recent attempt at turning on the Image....(I have attached it as well)

Any help would be greatly appreciated...
