IMO If one is not willing to upgrade the virtual hardware then one shouldn't participate as it kind of defeats the purpose of beta testing. You can (and should anyway) make proper backups to go back to even though you can change the compatibility before removing the Technology Preview. Also if reverting to the current GA release don't forget to uninstall the Technology Preview VMware Tools and install the version appropriate VMware Tools.
